Batthyányi Square Market Hall

In 1894, the city assembly decided to build the fair hall, but the hall was only built in 1901 according to the plans of Pál Klunzinger. The interior, reminiscent of the Central Market Hall, was designed to house 690 stalls with a floor area of 3156 m². Four transepts are connected perpendicular to the main nave, which are directly adjacent to each other by means of a lattice girder with a curved lower belt. The iron structures of the building were made by the Schlick factory. The hall was opened to the public on 13 April 1902.

History

Until the 1970s, the building’s gallery housed the large Budapest flower market. The commercial and transport role of the former Felsővásártér, then Bomba tér, now Batyi, which was the centre of the Water City, has always been prominent.

Renovation

It was a permanent port, a fast car station and is still one of the most complex public transport hubs in the capital.
